FanGraphs - Graphic Design

FanGraphs.com is a behemoth in the baseball analytics world. With industry leading statistics commonly referenced on baseball broadcasts, ESPN, and even by the players themselves, FanGraphs has lifted the veil on information that used to be exclusive to those inside the baseball industry.

Lead Designer

As the lead designer at FanGraphs.com, I manage and execute various design projects from ideation through delivery. This includes editorial and social media designs, merchandise, as well as branding (and rebranding) their podcasts and Twitch shows.

Editorial/Social Designs

Editorial/Social Media Designs

I created a new social media branding style for various recurring content published at FanGraphs.com, like our live chats, updates to site features, or baseball industry jobs. This branding is highly versatile with strong contrast and the noticeable FanGraphs colors that pop when browsing on Twitter.

Trade Value Series

The FanGraphs Trade Value Series is the oldest and most popular recurring series of the year, and I’ve given it a retro halftone design to reflect that history. It ranks the top 50 players in baseball based on the value they would theoretically return in a trade, with 10 players discussed each day of the week.

2022 Top 100 Prospects Feature

Our yearly prospect ranking is our most popular article of the year. The list is composed by our prospect team that has years of industry experience. It’s the most well-regarded publicly available Top 100 list in the industry, and completely free to use, unlike sites like ESPN or The Athletic which have their rankings behind a paywall.

“Best day of the year!” - FanGraphs’ Member

Sunday Notes

A weekly column that has been published by our reporter, David Laurila, every Sunday for eight years. It’s the only content we publish on the weekends and as such it’s become a sunday morning tradition for our readers, similar to the bygone tradition of reading the Sunday newspaper.

“The Sunday Notes column is always a part of my Sunday morning coffee routine.” - FanGraphs’ member

Podcast Branding

FanGraphs Audio

FanGraphs Audio is FanGraphs’ flagship podcast that has nearly 1000 episodes. At the start of the 2021 season, I had the pleasure of finally giving the podcast a design, where previously the logo was just the FanGraphs’ logo.

I worked with the producer to hone in on a retro inspired cartoonish baseball theme that fits perfectly with the shows theme song by The Tijuana Brass.

Chin Music

At the start of 2021, a long-time scouting director for the Houston Astros, Kevin Goldstein, left the front office life and joined our team at FanGraphs. He’s an influential and well-respected baseball mind who hosted one of the first popular baseball podcasts, Up and In, over a decade ago before joining the Astros. Now, back in the public-sphere, at FanGraphs he started a new podcast built in a similar mold and I had the pleasure of working with him on the branding.

Punk music is the backbone of Chin Music, with indie music guests and conversations that can often leave baseball far behind. Therefor, I created this podcast icon with a grungy halftone aesthetic that feels like it would be home on a punk album, while still having a baseball theme.

The Sleeper and the Bust

FanGraphs hosts fantasy baseball specific content on their sister site, RotoGraphs. RotoGraphs has a flagship podcast called The Sleeper and the Bust that has been around for years and over 1000 episodes.

This interconnecting arrow design represents the fantasy baseball staple of choosing one player over another, while incorporating RotoGraphs’ brown color scheme, as well as a grungy stipple texturing that fits with the shows underground hip hop theme song.

Twitch Branding

FanGraphs Live

FanGraphs has been attempting to build a streaming audience on Twitch.tv and has a few weekly broadcasts as well as streams during important games. I created various pieces of branding for them to have a cohesive and pleasing presence throughout their broadcasts.

Since their twitch streams primarily take place at night, I designed a late-night theme built on top of a dark background to reduce eye strain for those watching on their tv in a dark living room. The neon sign style “live” is now used across all of their twitch shows and gives the broadcast a sleek and recognizable look.

Merchandise

I’ve created a range of shirts for FanGraphs, and in 2022 had the pleasure of making some 10th anniversary designs for FanGraphs’ longest running podcast, Effectively Wild, that play on various inside jokes and theme songs from the show.
